HERMITUDE.

Absolutely killer clip for Hermitude‘s track ‘The Villian’. Taken off their amazing album of this year Hyperparadise. Some crazy thief&security style dance moves!

The dudes are doing a mini run of dates Jan/Feb of next year too. Make sure you check ’em out. Details here.

OCTOBER ’12 MIX

Ok, so slowly we’re getting back on track. This here is the October Mixtape, chockablock full of my fave tunes of October. Some absolute stunners in here – the Lower Spectrum EP was one I kept on coming back to, as was Tame Impala‘s record, Collarbones‘s second full length, as well as the Love Migrate disc. Then there were those big massive tracks – that Hermitude remix of Presets‘ ‘Ghosts’. MY GOSH.

All of the tracks are pretty excellent…and I think it’s one of the better tapes so far.

THE PRESETS + HERMITUDE.

Woah. Hermitude are doing some absolutely excellent things at the moment. Their production is absolutely stellar and ahead of the game. They’ve gone and completely fucked with the new Presets single, Ghosts, giving it an almost dancehall, post-dubstep vibe. Amazing.

The 10 Best Tracks of 2009

I’m beginning to sound like a broken record I know, but this list was probably the most difficult thing I’ve had to compile, even outside of the blog.

I think the main contributing factor behind this is that the blog isn’t specialised, there’s just too much good stuff out there to choose from. We don’t just post some electro/dance kinda stuff. We don’t just put a focus on indie rock. We post both of those…and about 50 other styles too (50 might be a slight tiny exageration…). As our About page says, “we’ll like just about anything”…and whilst this may seem to be a bit of a hinderence when it comes to compiling best of lists, I think it’s what makes maamf just that little bit different…different to the 50 gazillion other music blogs out there.

Anyway, enough of blowing the maamf trumpet and onto the 10 best tracks of 2009.

There’s a good mix here. Some electro, some indie pop, some singer songwriter stuff, hell…even some hip hop. I’ve even numbered them too…big call and was difficult…so please don’t take too much notice of the order the tracks are in!!

10. Goodnight Owl – Maps & Compasses

09. Van She – (Don’t Fear) The Reaper

08. The Temper Trap – Fader

07. The Golden Filter – Solid Gold

06. Hermitude – Your Call (feat. Urthboy & Elana Stone)

05. Tim & Jean – Come Around

04. Grizzly Bear – Two Weeks

03. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Zero

02. The Middle East – Blood

01. Phoenix – Lisztomania

Aye bru! Chick out this choice hip hop aye! Pitty et's Aussie aye!

I love beached whale. The ABC has developed it into a mini TV series (5minute eps) it’s that good. Not music related I know, but thought a little bit of randomness wouldn’t go astray! That’s pretty choice aye bro?!

Onto the music. People will know that Hip Hop isn’t exactly my thing. Although, listening to Triple J, it’s pretty hard to get away from it, and I am a little partial to a good Aussie accent coming through in tracks. This all stems from my post on the cover Melbourne based MC Illy did of Where Is My Mind by The Pixies. Another blog out there in the blogosphere, Musings, picked up on this track and although Musings is based ol’ London town, she shared my love of a good Aussie accent and summery feel beats.

From that, I’ve gone through my limited Aussie Hip-Hop collection and decided to post some of my faves. Some are old, and some are from the past year or two. To begin with, one of my earliest introductions into Aussie funk and hip hop. The crew is Koolism. They were pretty big about 5 years ago. This track comes off a compilation I got as part of Ministry Australia magazine.

Koolism – Koolism Is

(iTunes)

Next up is probably one of the biggest Aussie Hip Hop crews. They are Hilltop Hoods. They’re pretty good aye! This album became such a big album for everyone I knew when it came out. It changed the way Hip Hop was viewed in more mainstream Aussie music culture (Triple J, i’m looking at you!), as well as providing one of the best lines ever. “I’ll make origami of your lyrics…Gee…that’s good Suffa…what is it? IT’S A SWAN!”

Hilltop Hoods – Dumb Enough?

(Obese Records)

Next up is a pretty cool little number complete with jazz flute. Aussie hip-hop seems to have the best idea of what a party jam should be. This is definitely a fave. And it’s a pretty massif track. The dude’s name is Drapht – Illy dropped a line from this song in his Where Is My Mind cover.

Drapht – Jimmy Recard

(iTunes)

Final track to come out of my exploration into Aussie Hip-Hop is probably a favourite of the past year. I know it’ll feature in my best of list for this year. It’s got such a laidback feel. Such a simple premise for a track too. And it features an awesome ending with a freakin killer line. And it just brings home the funk. The dudes are Hermitude. It also features a great MC from The Herd, Urthboy, as well as a pretty stellar soul singer, Elana Stone.

Hermitude – Your Call (feat. Urthboy & Elana Stone)

(iTunes)

K. That’ll do the ramble for now.
