BEN WIDE BIG internet

Well this is real beautiful. Open Swimmer is the solo project of Ben TD with a little help from his friends. This track ‘Sugar Bowl’ is taken from the full length Canyon due out next Friday (17th October).

‘Sugar Bowl’ was produced by Nick Huggins from Two Bright Lakes, that great label that has many a great artist on it’s roster. And it sounds like a Two Bright Lakes release, especially some of the earlier Otouto, Kid Sam, Seagull kinda stuff. There’s a sincerity and joltiness and a thrown together/found sound feel to ‘Sugar Bowl’. The album itself features a whole heap of Two Bright Lakes fam, including Kishore Ryan (Kid Sam), Chris Bolton (Seagull), Martha Brown (Banoffee), Mark Gretton (Touch Typist) and a whole heap more.

I’d get around this release – reckon it’s gonna be pretty bloody special. You can stream the lead single below, and if you’re in Melbourne, make sure you check out Ben and his band (featuring Bec from the Harpoons, Chris from Seagull, Aaron from Frankolin, and Peter from Sweets and Hello Satellites) launch the thing at the Northcote Social Club on Friday 17th. Details here.

So this is my jam for a strange Sydney afternoon. Feels like it’s going to rain and it should be cold, but it’s instead still, and feels a little sticky, although according to the BOM it’s meant to be only 54% humidity.

Anyway, this ain’t no weather blog or somethin. This here be an Australian music blog. And Banoffee is killing me right now. The project of Martha Brown (otouto and general Two Bright Lakes fame), it is some nu-skool r’n’b that is minimal, not big, but still manages to make me feel like a little helpless, looking up in awe at the piece of work this is. It might be Martha’s voice, or the restrained nature of the production, or the fact that the clip for the song evolves from a confident musicalness into a strong female physical form.

Whatever it is, it’s working, and I’m now having trouble getting my work done.

Ok, so Aluka are a Melboune a-cappella crew. And you know what, that shouldn’t scare you as much as it first scared me.

Although these guys aren’t signed with Two Bright Lakes, they’re definitely putting forward that experimental delicate pop sound that that label is known for. So much so that producer extraordinaire, Nick Huggins lent his hand to the bands debut album, due out next year.

Below we got so much stuff for you. First off is a stream of new single ‘Keep My Cool’. Pure vocals with some decent harmonies and vocal tricks. It’s got this really tight structure to it which I really love.

Next up is a remix from none other than Oscar Key Sung. This guy seems to do no wrong! Featuring some of Oscar’s own vocals on top, it kinda takes away the intensity of the original, instead replacing it with this level of introspection. Such a nice take on a track.

Finally, the clip for the track. This has been doing the rounds for a little bit, and is so kinda half daggy that it’s cool.

Man. Seriously. I don’t know what’s gotten into me. It seems to be feel good central here at maamf…and yeah, I guess there’s nothing wrong with that!

The Harpoons are a Melbourne crew with some serious old school soul. Think some seriously funky bassline, an amazingly rich lead vocal and some killer harmonies to boot.

The guys are on Two Bright Lakes, home to locals Otouto, Collarbones, Batrider and Oscar + Martin amongst a whole heap of others. Martin from Oscar + Martin plays drums with the guys.

Anyway, check out their new single Keep You Around. If you like, then make sure you check them out as they play a couple of shows throughout November – dates after the jump.
