HOPIUM.
The first cut from Hopium threw me a bit. It was intense – ‘a track about the prospect of loss, a track about the intimacy and physical embodiment of human emotion‘.
This new cut ‘Dreamers’, is, on the surface, far more, for want of a better, more appropriate word, up. It’s brash in it’s production, unashamedly pop in it’s sound and outlook. It also features Phoebe from Snakadaktal, that band that captured many a heart a few years ago. When you have a listen though, the lyrics actually are a little down – the chorus begins:
‘you said this would be your year,
but you fucked around now december’s here,
you must be one of the dreamers’
This cut down, the reminder that perhaps you’re actually not as good as you think you’re going to be, is incredibly depressing, sure. It’s also pretty bloody direct, in your face with it’s aggression, albeit a fierce aggression lamenting the other end of the spectrum: laziness.
Hopium are definitely on to something. They manage to capture a state of being, a state of youth if you like, that gets little honest coverage. Really keen to hear more.

SNAKADAKTAL.
So some things are meant to be impressive. When I OH YOU announced the other day that Snakadaktal were releasing a new song this afternoon, I got pretty stoked. And the new song, exceeds my expectations (READ: is a fucking good song!).
‘Ghost’ is the first taste off the bands debut album Sleep In The Water which is due for release August 2. It’s slow sleepy layering showcases how these guys use atmosphere superbly. There’s also a complexity and a sophistication to it too – even moreso than their previous work. Head over to the band’s website for details on purchasing the album – snakadaktal.com

JUNE ’12 MIX.
It’s the June mixtape. Below are the tracks that have got me through the past month. It even features a small bit of a double feature working ‘Wimbledon 1980’ by Indian Wells and the Jon Hopkins piano version of ‘Modern Driveway’ originally by Luke Abbott.
This was easily the most fun mix to make, especially working with the opening rework. Once again, it features some absolutely killer tracks, from the amazing indie goodness of I, A Man, the almost tribal epicness of Jonathan Boulet to the straight out techno fantasticness of the latest track from The Presets.

SNAKADAKTAL.
‘The most talented kids in Australia’
That’s something you’ll probably hear a bit about the Snakadaktal peeps. Seriously great song writers who haven’t put a foot wrong yet. We caught new single ‘Dance Bear’ a few months ago when they played at the Northcote Social Club. It was killer then – went off a bit! – and now, we got a recorded version. You can stream it below now, and grab it from iTunes from tomorrow.
So keen on hearing their debut. Big loves to the I OH YOU crew aswell. Those kids be completely nuts.

That said, have decided to include two of the tracks as free downloads for you kats too.

TRIPLE J HOTTEST 100.
Yep, so think of it what you will, but this thing always manages to end up being a pretty massive day as well as creating a bit of controversy. Be it not having any females…to Angus & Julia Stone winning with a song about a big fucking plane. Shannon Noll sang about a big car…didn’t see him winning anything! (JOKES!)
Because maamf hasn’t done a best tracks of 2011 list (it is simply too hard and I think the ‘art’ of making a good album is more interesting), I thought I should post up what tracks I voted for in this years Hottest100. These are in no order…but hopefully they reflect my diverse taste which I try to put across on this here blog. If you still havent voted, then it all closes TOMORROW NIGHT! That’s Monday 16th Jan Midnight AEST. You can do so here. I do warn you though, it takes some time!
Without further ado:
Snakadaktal – Air
Oscar + Martin – Do The Right Thing
Step-Panther – My Neck
Battles – Ice Cream (Feat. Matias Aguayo)
Twerps – Dreamin
Architecture In Helsinki – Contact High
