The 10 Best Remixes of 2009

ok. So I know I said that these things are hard (For those new readers, I wrote last week that compiling my albums list was pretty freakin difficult), but man. I never thought that there would be so many remixes to dwindle down. It’s been a bloody good year for remixes I reckon. Hype bands like Phoenix, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Miike Snow have had the shit remixed out of them (I counted 34 remixes in my iTunes for Phoenix alone and I’m sure that’s only about half of them available out there). There has also been a few new dudes/dudettes to come on the scene who have produced some great remixes (Alan Wilkis is an awesome example of this).

Anyway, here it is though. (No order…too hard to do that too!)

The MAAMF Top 10 Remixes of 2009

Miike Snow – Animal (Mark Ronson Remix)

The Scare – Could Be Bad (G.L.O.V.E.S. 12″ Megamix)

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll (Passion Pit Remix)

Phoenix – Lisztomania (Yuksek Remix)

Little Boots – New In Town (Fred Falke Remix)

Ladyhawke – Paris is Burning (Alex Metric Remix)

Miami Horror – Sometimes (G.L.O.V.E.S. Remix)

The Temper Trap – Sweet Disposition (Alan Wilkis Remix)

Lost Valentinos – Thief (Shinichi Osawa Remix)

Van She – Talkin’ (Van She Tech Remix)

What do you think? Good list? I think it covers a bit. I originally had close to 40 remixes that were all in serious contention…so I’m sure I’ve left something out etc. A few standouts for me were the Alan Wilkis remix of TTT. Changed the song completely, and it worked bloody well. He had a few remixes in contention actually – check his remixes out on Hype Machine. Another standout of the year would definitely be G.L.O.V.E.S. He’s put forward some awesome remixes this year – so good, I had to include 2 in my list! There were other obvious inlusions like Fred Falke (it wouldn’t be a MAAMF best of list without some of the Falkemeister) and his French pal Yuksek. All of them were standouts though…you know…that’s what a best of list is kinda all about and shit.

Anyway, comment away.

I’m going to do a few of these. And they’ll be themed(ish). First is some of the early electronic stuff. Themed(ish) because there’s some breaks here as well as some vocal remix electro. But they’re all remixes though. I’m going to include the blog post as well as any band links, purchase links too. If you like, please support them in some way.

Anyway, without further ado, here are some of the better tracks that featured a few months ago on ze blogo.

remix that #5

napt_press_small

ok. So something dropped in the inbox this morning. It was a new mix of a track called Fortune by two dudes from the UK called NAPT. Oh, and it’s a bit of breaks. I used to love breaks. Being an ‘ex-drummer’, I use to think breaks and drum’n’bass were the two coolest genres within electronic music. Anyway, this new mix was produced exclusively for Fabric London in light of NAPT’s pretty massive gig their on this Friday night. Wish I could go…but you know, with being on the other side of the world, that kinda stuff is difficult.

ok. here it is.

NAPT – Fortune (12Inch Dub Mix)

(MySpace, Facebook, iTunes)

This wouldn’t be a remix that post without a few other tracks that have been a little non stop on ze ipod. Next up is a track by some dude called Esser. Being in Australia, I never really heard much about this guy, but I think in the UK you either really like him, or you really don’t like him. Anyway, a remix dropped in the inbox a few days ago by Treasure Fingers. Is good. Has been in my head since. Thanks toRCRD LBL for this one.

Esser – Headlock (Treasure Fingers’ Vocoder Workout)

(iTunes)

Final on the list of tricks is those dudes the Lost Valentinos. They’ve got a track called Thief which is pretty darn sweet. There is a remix by a dude called Shinichi Osawa. This is a pretty incredible remix in my books. It goes freaking hard. Thumps all the way home. Like, you’ve heard good amazing electro. But then there’s Shinichi Osawa’s remix of it. haha…a little obsessed. You can thanks the Radio Funktrust boys for getting me onto this.

Thief – Lost Valentinos (Shinichi Osawa Remix)

(Check the boys out on Beatport, iTunes)

That’s it for this one. They’re all stella stella tracks. Definitely worth the check.

K. That’ll do the ramble for now.

new music first #7

kinda rad music overload

ok. so it’s a new music post and it’s all some decent electro stuff that has got me a movin lately. There’s a bit of local stuff, some US stuff, and I think some stuff from Vietnam. There’s some thumping stuff and some great chilled stuff. So, i guess by now you’ve guessed that there’s some stuff in this post.

…hmm…I’m watching the doggies absolutely kill the hawks (it’s 58 to 2 and the first quarter hasn’t even finished yet!). We’re playing bloody well. So that’s why i sound distracted.

Anyway, I’m not as excited about the tracks featured in this post as i was about the tracks i featured in my last New Music First post. But I am definately excited about the local stuff.

ok. Let’s get the ball rolling. First up is a track by the Lost Valentinos. I could’ve seen these guys at the Bacardi Express Tour earlier on this year, but having not heard any of their stuff, didn’t really bother about it. Pity. Midnights is epic – it’s so epic they’ve put it into two parts. Both parts are different in sound but you can tell that they’re both part of the same track. anyway.

Lost Valentinos – Modnights (Original Parts 1 & 2)

Second up is another local, from Sydney. Canyons signed to Modular a few months ago which means they’ll get some decent exposure. The only stuff i’ve heard of these guys is a mini track on the Bang Gang comp last year, so hearing this track was pretty exciting. This is a banging track too. Just builds and builds.

Canyons – Blue Snakes

Thirdly, a track by someone who’s name i’d seen but never actually heard. That seems to happen a fair bit to me actually. Anyway, St Vincent is from New York and is good. Very good. I only know the one track though mind you so I could be wrong. Is such a great song though so I’m not too sure if that’s possible. I think i need to buy her album!

St Vincent – Laughing With A Mouth Of Blood

Finally, a track by a band with one of the strangest names I think i’ve ever heard. I mean, what in the hell is a Black Moth Super Rainbow? Haha…who knows. And the fact that they say they’re from Vietnam has me perplexed. They do, however, make some pretty decent music. This one reminds me of All My Friends by Groove Armada a bit. I like.

Black Moth Super Rainbow – Twin of Myself

K. That’ll do the ramble for now.
