Oh man. Sometimes I really just sleep on things.
But then you come across a remix of that track you slept on. And you go back and revisit the original as well as that super strange reworked version that one of your favourite bands have done and you think that perhaps you shouldn’t sleep anymore.
Dorsal Fins is the project of Liam McGorry (from Saskwatch fame). His solo work is a studio only affair and features the vocals of Jarrad Brown, one of his mates in that other band Liam plays in Eagle And The Worm. It’s rollicking, good fun, kinda classic songwriting. And Jarrad’s strained vocals add this real confidence.
The remix comes from King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard. Stu and Joey from the band are behind it, and have forced it into this drawn out, glitch filled, cave style track, that is still oddly reminiscent of the original. Really nice.
I really don’t know what to say. This country’s best fun based psych band King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard are back. The guys are set to release their fourth album in 2 years. Yah. You don’t need those eyes checked. These guys nuts. But, the quality is always good. As I recently wrote, it’s hard not to include a King Gizz album in a top 10 list.
Their new one, ‘Vegemite’ has thrown me a little, but I gotta admit, it’s been on rotation all afternoon and I know what I’m having for breakfast tomorrow morning. The thing that people are obviously talking about are those eyes and mouths in that Vegemite. It’s creepy, but also, I’m told, a great exfoliant.
Brand new taste of the new King Gizzard album due out in September. ‘Head On/Pill’ is 16 minutes of epic Gizzard sounds, now with added sitar. Usually I would see sitar and think, oh gosh, the King Gizz’s have gone to King Jizz’s (shit joke I know), but after I heard the rollicking track, I was convinced otherwise. The sitar sits as part of the rhythm section, and although you can hear it in the mix, it never features obnoxiously. And really, how the fuck can you turn down a 16 minute epic from these fellas? Really keen for the new album.
Feb was full of stuff. A hell of a lot of stuff. So this list is full of the stuff that Feb was full of, but not full of the stuff that I already wrote a whole heap of stuff about.
I’ve also omitted quite a few things which I’m going to spend my time writing about too – you can check those out over the next week or so.
But, without further ado, here’s the Feb ’13 Mixtape. Of course, it’s eclectic, but man, I don’t know whether I’ve had a more eclectic bunch. That King Gizzard track from their new album is an obvious standout, but then there’s also the newy from Francolin, a band that saved my night a couple of weeks ago. There’s some great funky stuff in there too – MKO, Blunt B, Azure Maya.
But yeah, I could go on forever. I won’t though. That will probably bore you. Hell, it’s already boring me.

ok, so here we go. It’s only about a week or so late, but I’ve been pretty busy lately (mismatch.tv being a big focus). This month has seen so many awesome releases, and like always, a pretty big mix of stuff. The St Vitus Cardinals boys are doing some really sweet things at the mo (I actually had a chat to Ry about it and his solo stuff earlier on in the week). Tyler Touché is also a standout for me – he’s a friggin’ high school kid and he has production skills like that??!! It also makes me pretty hungry, french style.
Then then there’s the awesome sounds of bands like Lurch & Chief, The Smith Street Band and King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard (their album is stellar!). As per usual, some tracks are available for individual download, others, you just gonna have to hear in the full tape.
Worst Friends – Neve’s For None (Faux Pas Remix)

2:40 of raucous, don’t-give-a-shit scuzzed out rock’n’roll. King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard are back with another amazing single, ‘Elbow’. The follow up to ‘Bloody Ripper’ which featured back in the maamf April mixtape, ‘Elbow’ feels like a whole heap of stuff thrown together, going ape-shit dangerously close at the end of a fucking big cliff. But there’s this continuity in there (the aye aye aye aye aye’s) that keeps it all together. And then of course there’s that out of left field guitar solo that finishes up the track.
This this will keep me manic for a few days.
So, this is perhaps the latest a mixtape has ever been…a little over a month late. Pretty abysmal I know.
But you know what, it’s a fucking good tape.
Bewilderbeast – Push’d Out
Jonathan Boulet – This Song Is Called Raggard
Muscles – Ready for a Fight
World’s End Press – Second Day Uptown
Major Lazer – Get Free (Feat. Amber of Dirty Projectors)

Yep. You read right. King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard is the name that these 7 Carlton boys go by. Featuring some of the guys from fellow Melbourne guys, and new maamf faves Love Migrate, they sounds pretty different, showcasing a bit more of a DIY guitar sound (think bands like Boomgates, The Twerps etc). It’s kinda a slacker version of surf punk.
Anywho, the guys have a track out, Black Tooth which the PR guys say “is two minutes and thirty seconds of music to rob banks to”. Ha. What an apt description. This is a really decent track, complete with a we’ll do it our way attitude.
To help celebrate the release of the new single, they’ve got a bit of an east coast tour happening. Check out the dates after the stream.
