Just A Ramble

TRIPLE J HOTTEST100? OR DISAPPOINTING 100?

For me, this years Hottest100 was pretty disappointing. Only three of my top10 tracks got in. Pretty shocked in a way.

So, for those that missed the whole thing, Angus & Julia Stone got #1 with Big Jet Plane. Whilst I don’t hate Big Jet Plane, having them at number 1? REALLY?

For me, there were a few massive letdowns.

  • There was no The Holidays
  • There was no Cut Copy
  • There was no Beach House
  • Kanye didn’t even hit the top10!!
  • One of the best songs of the year Time To Wander by Gypsy & The Cat got in at #73

If you want to see the list for yourself, jump along to here. There were some good inclusions in there, but most of these were in the wrong half, and bands like Gorillaz didn’t even hit the top 30.

I know things like this are never going to please everyone, and I’m definitely not going to start hating on Triple J (I’ll hate on a fair few of their listeners though), but man, I thought last year was a pretty stellar year for music, and I’m genuinely surprised that The Holidays didn’t make it in. Like, really surprised.

But yes, the tracks I voted for are below. Gypsy & The Cat, Kanye and Yeasayer all made it in with the tracks below, but none hit the top 10 (Runaway got #14)

I suppose one of the big things is that I won’t stop listening to the JJJs. I love Zan’s show in the morning, always try and listen to Home & Hosed each weeknight, and have made a habit of listening to 2011 each Sunday night. And hell, I’m even listening to the J House Party thingy right now as I type. All of these shows put forward some pretty awesome music, a lot of it pretty new too. Richard Kingsmill is one of the best and most influential men in Aussie music, and programs like Unearthed, and even things like The One Night Stand that Triple J put on are really important for the whole of Australia and the music industry.

So yes, I guess I love the JJJs. Sure, some of the tracks they play aren’t my thing – if I hear another stadium rock band (Birds Of Tokyo etc), I may do something silly, but all in all, they’re perhaps the most important thing in the Australian music industry. That, and all the excellent local stations like 3RRR and FBi.

But yep. If I had it my way, here’s what I would’ve put as my top5. These aren’t necessarily my top 5 songs of last year, just my top 5 from the list that Triple J provides.

The Radio Dept. – Heaven’s On Fire

Dan Kelly – Hold On, I’m Coming On

Kanye West – Runaway (feat. Pusha T)

The Holidays – Broken Bones

Gypsy & The Cat – Time To Wander

we got broken

my laptop broke. Hopefully I haven’t lost my music, but we’ll see. Sucks massively, especially because it’s close to the end of the year and all that top 10 lists stuff is about to begin. But yes, we’ll see.

And before you ask “but you’re writing a post now! you’re lying right??!!” i’m actually at uni, my old uni, the one i don’t go to anymore writing this post on a computer here.

Anyway, will keep you dude(s) posted about how we go.

we’re back

We’re back bitches!

Bigger and better.

Harder and stronger.

We got this funny lookin new header up. And we’ve taken up some of your advice too. Expect a few new things to hit the maamf fan in the next few weeks or so.

To the lovely peeps that actually bothered to do the survey, thank you. For a moment then, i actually thought no-one would fill the thing out. We’ve already acted on one’s advice and got rid of that bleeding eyes background. Gonna start doing a bit more tour/music news kinda posts too. Also, to those that said they’d be up for contributing to maamf, shoot us through an email and we’ll organise that stuff (meandallmyfriends.au@gmail.com).

Gonna try and keep the posts daily too…and to get the momentum going, we got our first post going up in about an hour or so.

Dan Kelly – Hold On, I’m Coming On

Some time off

Hey dudes.

Maamf is taking some time off. We’ll be back bigger and better in a few weeks, hopefully by November 1. Nothing’s happening to Maamf, but something’s happening to me, Miks. As I’m sure you might know if you’re an avid maamf reader or if you actually know me, I’m writing my thesis, and I’m anticipating I’ll need the rest of October just to myself so I can get the bloody thing finished. Am locking myself in a library for the next couple of weeks and writing and editing and man, all the rest of it. Crazy times.

Anyway, enough of me and my thesis. Will be back soon better than ever. Am thinking big things for maamf next year. If you got some suggestions in the meantime though, then PLEASE fill out the Make MAAMF Better survey! There’s a link just to the right. The survey will remain active until we return, so we hope to have heaps and heaps of suggestions (one suggestion we’ve already acted on is the background…apparently it was making peeps eyes bleed. Ouch. Please forward all doctor bills to me! Haha…don’t really. Only a joke. Don’t want to pay for your bleeding eyes…don’t have the cash).

So…umm…anyway…see you in a few weeks!

YEEEEWWWWWW!!!

Gypsy & The Cat – Time To Wander (well…actually, no wandering for me…just writin’ n’ shit.)

newstart

Yep. You haven’t just come across another blog that you thought was maamf but isn’t. It still is maamf! Don’t worry! We just changed out header design and did a few other little tweaks here and there. Comment away though…you could hate it and we could lose readers…and well…not to sound desperate or anything, but that would be really really bad and sad!

Anyway, let us know. The old header is still up on our Facebook page…so if you’ve forgotten and want to compare, then you can always check back there.

Speaking of new though…

Gerling – Newwave Machine

posse.

ok. Posse is this awesome thing set up by a few dudes. It let’s you sell tickets to gigs and you can make a small commission for each ticket you sell. maamf just signed up a few days ago (check out the ‘get tix‘ tab to the left)…so, you can score tix to gigs via our Posse store if you like!

We’ll get a tiny commission from each ticket sold (you to can get your own store and sell tix and earn some cash for doing so). maamf doesn’t make any cash from this blog as wordpress doesn’t allow advertising, so buying tix through our posse page is a small way of giving back to us :)

Also, we encourage you to scour the whole of Posse. If there’s a gig there that we aren’t a seller for, comment or email meandallmyfriends.au@gmail.com and we’ll add it.

something bigger

Hey guys,

Over the next few weeks, maamf may go through a few changes. To start with, we’ve got a new header. Do you like it? Is it (a) hit/shit? The photo was taken by myself last year in ACDC lane down here in Melbourne, just opposite where Honkytonks/3rd Class use to be. The original sheets of paper read ‘again’ and the photo itself seems to keep on popping up with things I do. It’s my background on my laptop and use to be the background for my iphone.  Don’t know what it is about the shot, but it gets to me somehow.

Anyway, just thought I should give you a heads up. Am also considering buying a domain name so the url of the blog may change too. I’ll be keeping peeps updated on Facebook as well as Twitter though so don’t stress!

Van She – Changes (Gloves Remix)

Anyway, let me know what you reckon! Is there anything else you’d like to see??

laneway festival: new venue, new lineup

not here anymore...

You think Laneway Festival. You think St Jeromes. You think all those cool laneways in Melbourne. Well…this year you think wrong. St Jeromes closed it’s doors earlier on this year, and after a pretty bad festival this year (punters pissing in the street, massive scheduling probs etc), the organisers have decided to move it. And this time it’s not a laneway. It’s actually a pretty open area. Footscray Community Arts Centre is where it’s at next year. Some may think why?! Footscray?? Isn’t that junkie town? Hehe…well yeah, there is that side of it. It’s also a pretty funky area – super multicultural! If you ever want a good meal, check out just about any Footscray cafe/restaurant. Especially if you dig middle eastern food and also african food. Awesome awesome awesome. You can check out a run through of the venue here.

Anyway, the lineup for the gig is looking pretty good so far. Local bands like The Middle East, Dappled Citties, and Eddy Current Suppression Ring, as well as local solo dudettes and dudes Sarah Blasko and Whitley. For a local lineup, that’s pretty good so far. But I think it’s the international artists that really sell it. Florence & The Machine, Hockey, NASA, The XX, The Very Best, Mumford and Sons. I mean geez! It’s a music bloggers wet fuckin dream!

Tickets for all legs of the fest (Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth) go on sale Friday (30th October). Can not wait! Good Vibes tix also go on sale that day too…so I think I might just have to waste a bit of money on Friday. Hehe.

To leave you with, a few of the tracks from the bands/artists I’m really hanging out to see.

Mumford & Sons – Little Lion Man

(iTunes, JB HiFi)

The Middle East – Blood

(iTunes, JB HiFi)

Whitley – Head, First, Down

(iTunes, JB HiFi)

K. That’ll do the ramble for now.

harder better faster stronger…and longer

no. it’s not what you’re thinking. I mean gee. I don’t even have to write anything and you already assume. YOU HAVE A VERY VERY DIRTY MIND!. Very dirty. Ok. Well now that that’s out of the way, i’d like to tell you about some of the stuff i’ve been listening to lately.

One of the things i love about blogging about music is the fact that I get to explore and listen to all this music I wouldn’t normally. Whilst I still have my main loves of indie dance and good guitar indie pop, i’ve been getting into some really long mixes from some local dj’s. Inner City Waste is a night here in Melbourne Town. It’s pretty decent and they seem to get a lot of sets from the Bang Gang fellas. Anyway, if you like your hour long mixes, then the Inner City Waste website is a great place to start. I especially recommend checking out the Gus Da Hoodrat 5 hour set. That’s if your download limit allows it. Thank God for Uni Internet!!! Another set I’ve found is one by some local boys Leslie Salvador. You can check that out here:

Leslie Salvador – Fromage Disco

On Friday night I’m checking out VAN SHE!!! I love these guys. They’ve just released a remix album of their own stuff and it is freaking sweet as. You can check it out here on iTunes. They did a dj set as Van She Tech on Triple J’s Mix Up – they’ve got a residency 9-10 every saturday night for the whole of June. Anyway, here’s a link for you to download the first set they did. I’ve also included a teaser of their remix album.

Van She – Ze Vemixes (Teaser Mix)

Anyway, you should definately chack them out. Check out their myspace for more details!

K. That’ll do the ramble for now.

Van She TOUR!!

best of so far…

Ok. So, this is going to be moved into a page next to the best albums page. There’s been too many good albums so far this year and I thought I should start to collate a list. I think it’ll be a pretty long list by years end though…haha. So, anyway, i’ll put them up here, and then create a page with them with a few mini review kind of things.

Ok. Here goes.

Passion Pit – Manners.

Peaches – I Feel Cream

The Little Stevies – Love Your Band

The Whitest Boy Alive – Rules

Grizzly Bear – Veckatimest

Death Cab For Cutie – The Open Door EP

Ok, so after looking through all the albums i’ve bought/downloaded this year, I’ve realised that not all of them were actually released this year.

So, I think a second list is in order. Albums i’ve bought/downloaded this year that weren’t released this year that i’ve loved. Long title. I know. You’ll get over it.

Cut Copy – Far Away EP

Cut Off Your Hands – You And I

Josh Pyke – Chimney’s Afire

Sia – Some People Have Real Problems

Ratatat – LP3

The Bang Gang DeeJays – D Is For Disco, E Is For Dancing

K. So, it’s pretty diverse I reckon. Good stuff so far this year.

I’m sure the list’ll be addedd to soon 🙂

To finish off with, some of my favourite tracks of the year so far. Just for you guys. I’m sweet aren’t I? Yeah, I know.

The Golden Filter – Solid Gold

Passion Pit – Little Secrets

Bombay Bicycle Club – Always Like This

K. That’ll do the ramble for now.
